No injuries were reported, but 18,000 customers were without electricity as darkness fell and phone service was spotty throughout the region, said Sheriff's Department Cpl. Brenda Godsey.

Emergency services personnel were fanning across the 3,000-square-mile county to assess numerous reports of gas and water leaks, Godsey said. No major structural damage was initially reported.

The quake struck at 4:27 p.m. about 33 miles southwest of Eureka, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Five aftershocks followed within the next two hours, the strongest measuring 3.8.

In Eureka, population 26,000, some residents called the quake one of the strongest they had ever felt.

"There's paint all over the floor and smashed lightbulbs everywhere," said Jack Rieke, owner of Shafer's Ace Hardware on E Street.

Within moments of the quake striking, about 40 people had lined up outside the store to buy emergency supplies and generators.

"We're only letting three in at a time because of the mess," Rieke said. "It's pretty messed up here right now."

Power was out in much of Eureka and to the north in Arcata, home of Humboldt State University. To the south, the electricity was still on in Ferndale, but plate glass windows in the 1,500-resident town's historic downtown were shattered.

The quake was "very sharp, very powerful. Not like the usual rolling type that give you a little warning," said Caroline Titus, editor and publisher of the Ferndale Enterprise.

The quake was felt as far south as Capitola, as far north as Eugene, Ore., and as far east as Reno. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said there was no apparent threat of a tsunami.
